Operating in a situation where not everything is visible can lead to unwanted problems.This is especially true in the case of underground drilling. How is directional drilling accomplished? The projects are usually done in phases, mostly three different phases. To start, an initial hole, known as a pilot hole, is drilled from one surface point to another, creating a directional path. Secondly, the pilot hole and bore are made bigger, big enough to accomodate the pipe that will be used as the conduit in the project. When that is done, it is time to insert the pipeline. This is done by pulling it underground into the pathway hole drilled by the directional drilling process.

Some of their projects that require horizontal boring, underground boring or directional drilling include installing water lines, fiber-optic cables for telecommunications, roads, gas and/or oil pipelines and pipelines for other products.

Subsurface locations must be carefully researched and monitored by contractors and engineers so as to avoid disturbing the natural environment. Many challenges are posed to those who do directional drilling professionally. But it is extremely efficient and productive. Compared to traditional methods, directional drilling results in twice as much oil or gas being produced. And with 2.5 million miles (estimated) in the U.S. of pipeline, the product reaches its source efficiently.

Today, the method used for directional drilling has many advantages. It is cost effective and safe. It is used for bores which range in size between 2 and 48-inch diameters and 600 ft to 1800 ft in length. Directional drilling is definitely a productive and profitable advancement of modern technology.
